Understanding the Benefits of Acne Correctives

Dealing with acne can be challenging, but understanding the right correctives can make a world of difference. Whether you're struggling with breakouts, blackheads, or uneven skin tone, specific ingredients in your skincare products can effectively target and alleviate these concerns. In this blog, we delve into four powerful acne-clearing ingredients. Each of these correctives has unique benefits and applications, helping you achieve clearer, healthier skin. Let's explore how these ingredients work and how they can be integrated into your skincare routine for optimal results.

Benzoyl Peroxide (also known as BPO, BP Gel, and Acne Med)

Benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching and peeling agent. It also increases cell turnover, reduces bacterial count, reduces inflammation and pain associated with acne lesions, eliminates oils, and works as an antimicrobial. As a result, it clears up existing acne and prevents future breakouts.

Benzoyl peroxide is our first line of defense against moderate to severe acne, but it is a strong corrective and we recommend you use it under guidance. Overuse may cause sensitivity and irritation. Continual use may generate free radicals that cause extra wear and tear on the skin. When you work with us, we will help you use this product to attain clear skin. And once your skin is clear, we'll help you transition to other products to help you stay clear without prolonged use of benzoyl peroxide.

Mandelic Acid

Mandelic acid is a natural exfoliant originally derived from almonds. It works to treat a variety of skin conditions including photo-aging, acne, rosacea, and uneven skin tone. It is antibacterial, antifungal, and extremely beneficial for lightening acne scarring and preventing future breakouts. It is our first choice for follicular acne which usually occurs on the forehead and jawline.

Mandelic acid is completely safe for long term use and is offered in many different forms and strengths. It provides mild exfoliation as well as antiseptic and antibacterial support. It also reduces inflammation and redness.

If you are currently using a benzoyl peroxide treatment at night, try using a good mandelic serum like Face Reality Mandelic 8% Serum in the morning for added support. Mandelic serums may also be used alone or mixed with an acne-safe moisturizer or sunscreen.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is in the same family as mandelic acid (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and removes dead skin cells through exfoliation. Glycolic acid is most beneficial to those who suffer from blackheads and large pores. Those with more cystic inflamed acne tend to do better with mandelic acid or salicylic acid.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a superb exfoliant as well as an analgesic and pain reliever. Salicylic acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid known for aiding cellular turnover, neutralizing bacteria, and reducing redness. Salicylic acid is often paired with other acids in toners, cleansers, and spot treatments for best results. Salicylic acid is not usually recommended for blackhead prone skin. It tends to dry the blackhead into the skin unless it is combined with retinol.
