Eye Care Tips for Acne Prone Skin
Let's talk about the special attention that the delicate eye area deserves. Today, we'll delve a little deeper into this subject, specifically addressing the proper care and treatment of the eye area for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin. We'll provide you with a few pro studio tips on how to avoid common skincare mistakes that can actually sabotage your skin-clearing goals.
Tip #1: Use an acne-safe eye cream or gel. While you might not be breaking out under your eyes, the products you apply to your eye area will travel to the rest of your face. This is where I commonly see breakouts in clients who are treating acne but not using an eye care product best suited for their specific needs. It’s important to be sure that your eye cream or gel does not contain ingredients that will flare up the skin on your face while it’s working hard to heal. The oils in non-acne-safe creams and lotions can actually deactivate acne medication ingredients.
Tip #2: Skip the nighttime eye care routine. Did you know that most eye care products should not be used at night for those who are on an acne treatment plan? This is because the active ingredients working to clear your skin can actually travel to and harm the fragile eye area. (The exception to this is eye gels because the gel prevents the acne med from spreading into the eye area.)
The morning is a great time to show the eye area some extra love while your acne medication is reserved for the evenings. Acne med contains benzoyl peroxide, which can cause dryness and irritation to delicate skin. This is not something you want near your eyes.
Note: If you feel that the skin under your eyes does require added hydration at night, I recommend applying an acne-safe eye gel (not a cream) and allowing it to dry completely before applying acne med products to the face.
Tip #3: Choose the right product for you. With so many different eye creams on the market, choosing just one can feel a little overwhelming. So, if you’re wondering what is the best eye treatment product for acne-prone skin, here are a few of my suggestions:
Face Reality Antioxidant Peptide Eye Gel - Antioxidant Peptide Eye Gel is infused with antioxidant and skin-strengthening ingredients that diminish the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines. This nourishing formula stimulates collagen production, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin. This gel can be applied after cleansing and before acne med.
Sorella Apothecary Aloe Cucumber Eye Gel - Aloe and cucumber benefits for the skin provide a soothing spa-like experience, especially when applied cooled from the refrigerator. This refreshing gel reduces inflammation, brightens dark circles under eyes, and reduces puffiness that can leave you with tired under-eye bags. A touch of lightening extracts and peptides brighten and hydrate the eye area, while hyaluronic acid benefits the skin by plumping up tissue and smoothing away fine lines.
BiON Youthful Eyes Peptide Cream - This is a light eye cream that is a favorite of both acne clients and acne-free adult women. It contains ingredients specifically formulated to reduce lines, puffiness, and discoloration. The soy rice peptides in this formula stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis and have been shown to provide a dramatic reduction in discoloration and puffiness around the eyes after only 8 weeks of treatment. For an extra boost of hydration, this product can be layered on top of the Sorella Apothecary Aloe Cucumber Eye Gel.
