Nicole's Story: Why the Right Products in the Right Order Made All the Difference

before and after picture of breakouts on the jawline

Sometimes the gap between struggling and clear comes down to a few precise adjustments. Nicole's story is a perfect example.

Nicole came to us already using a Face Reality-based routine, which told us she had done her research. She was committed to treating her cystic acne seriously and had invested in professional-grade products. But two things were holding her back: an off-brand mandelic serum that wasn't delivering what she expected, and a product application order that was working against her results.

The Mandelic Serum Mistake Most People Don't Know About

Not all mandelic acid is created equal — and when it comes to treating acne, the distinction matters significantly.

Effective mandelic acid for acne must be L-Mandelic acid, meaning the ingredient should read as L-Mandelic Acid on the label. This is the isomer that is clinically shown to normalize cell turnover, reduce acne-causing bacteria, and address post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Generic or off-brand mandelic serums frequently use a racemic blend, which is a mixture of both the L and D forms, or an unspecified form that delivers a fraction of the corrective benefit. Nicole's serum fell into this category.

Switching to Face Reality Mandelic Serum 8% — which uses properly specified L-Mandelic Acid in an effective concentration — was one of the most impactful changes we made to her routine.

The Order of Application Matters More Than Most People Realize

The second adjustment was sequencing. Skincare products are formulated to work in a specific order, and applying them out of sequence can reduce their efficacy or, in the case of active serums, create unnecessary irritation. With acne-prone skin, irritation is never a minor inconvenience. It is an inflammatory trigger that can worsen breakouts directly.

Once Nicole's routine was reorganized and her mandelic serum was swapped, her skin responded quickly and clearly.

"I had horrendous cystic acne. I've been using the prescribed regimen from my skincare specialist with you guys and my skin is completely clear and looks fantastic."

Completely clear. That is the result of the right products, in the right order, used consistently.

Nicole's Clear Skin Routine

Morning

Cleanse:

Face Reality Ultra Gentle Gel Cleanser

Serum:

Face Reality Mandelic Serum 8%

Look for L-Mandelic Acid on the ingredient label. This is the active form that effectively treats acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Off-brand or unspecified mandelic serums may not deliver the same results.

Moisturize:

Face Reality Cran-Peptide Cream

Protect: Face Reality Daily SPF 30 Plus

SPF is required when using acne correctives. Mandelic acid and other acne actives increase sun sensitivity — skipping SPF slows clearing and worsens post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Evening

Cleanse:

Face Reality Ultra Gentle Gel Cleanser

Icing: Rub an ice cube over inflamed lesions and areas of redness for approximately two minutes. For a single lesion, apply for 3 seconds, lift for 3 seconds, and repeat for 2 minutes. Icing is one of the most effective and underused tools in an acne routine — it reduces inflammation directly and immediately, without any product interaction.

Hydrate:

Face Reality Hydrabalance Hydrating Gel

Antibacterial Support:

Face Reality Advanced Acne Med 2.5%

Acne Med is a preventative treatment, not a spot treatment. Apply a dime to nickel-sized amount to the entire acne-prone area, avoiding eyes and lips. Even when your skin is clear, continue applying it to all acne-prone areas to prevent future breakouts. Spot treating is not effective.

The right products, in the right order, with the right guidance. If you are ready to build a routine that actually works for your acne, our acne specialists are here. Start a complimentary consultation.
