Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum
The Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum is a corrective vitamin A serum built specifically for skin that doesn't tolerate traditional retinoids well. At its core is IconicA®, a stabilized, bioavailable form of retinaldehyde (retinal) that converts to retinoic acid in the skin one step faster than retinol, delivering visible results with significantly less irritation. The formula is fragrance-free, gluten-free, and housed in an airless pump to keep the actives stable and effective.
Key Benefits
Visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles IconicA® retinaldehyde accelerates skin cell turnover and supports collagen synthesis, so the skin surface becomes smoother and lines appear less defined with consistent use.
Calms redness while it corrects Niacinamide and bisabolol work together to quiet inflammation and reduce visible redness, making this serum suitable for reactive or sensitized skin that typically can't tolerate vitamin A.
Fights the sugar damage that ages skin Carnosine, benfotiamine, and carnitine are anti-glycation ingredients that protect collagen and elastin fibers from the cross-linking process that causes skin to lose firmness and develop a dull, stiffened texture over time.
Supports skin barrier strength and hydration Gluconolactone, a polyhydroxy acid, hydrates and reinforces the skin barrier without exfoliating aggressively, while organic aloe and glycerin help the skin retain moisture throughout the correction process.
Delivers antioxidant protection at the cellular level Tocopherol, tocotrienols, cloudberry seed oil, and sunflower seed oil supply a broad spectrum of vitamin E forms alongside essential fatty acids to neutralize free radical damage and support long-term skin resilience.
This serum is ideal for anyone who wants the corrective benefits of a vitamin A treatment but has found traditional retinol to be too irritating, drying, or sensitizing. If your skin tends toward redness, reactivity, or visible sensitivity, the IconicA® retinaldehyde in this formula delivers results through a gentler conversion pathway that doesn't compromise your barrier in the process.
It's also a strong fit for anyone focused on anti-aging concerns: fine lines, uneven skin tone, loss of firmness, or rough texture. The anti-glycation complex makes it particularly relevant for mature skin that is dealing with the cumulative effects of collagen breakdown over time.
Those with rosacea-prone, post-procedure, or chronically sensitized skin will appreciate that this formula was developed by Hale & Hush, a brand whose entire philosophy centers on sensitive skin care.
If you are new to retinaldehyde or making the switch from a lower-strength retinol, start with 2-3 evenings per week for the first two to three weeks before moving to nightly use. This gives your skin time to acclimate to the faster conversion rate of retinal, and most people find they can reach consistent nightly use without the peeling or tightness that often comes with retinol introductions.
Prepare: Cleanse and tone the skin before applying.
Apply: Dispense 1-2 pumps into your fingertips and press evenly across the face.
Frequency: Use in the evening only. For extra sensitive skin, begin with 2-3 evenings per week and increase as tolerated.
Follow: Layer a moisturizer over the serum after application. Apply broad-spectrum SPF every morning while using this product.

What makes the retinal in the Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum different from retinol?
Retinal (retinaldehyde) is one step closer to retinoic acid in the vitamin A conversion chain than retinol, which means it works more efficiently and at lower concentrations. The IconicA® form used in this serum is stabilized for bioavailability, so the skin can access its benefits without the prolonged conversion process that often contributes to the irritation and dryness associated with retinol.
Is the Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum appropriate for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin?
Yes, this serum was specifically formulated with sensitive skin in mind. The combination of IconicA® retinaldehyde with niacinamide, bisabolol, and gluconolactone is designed to deliver vitamin A correction while actively supporting the skin barrier and calming inflammation. Hale & Hush as a brand focuses exclusively on sensitive skin care, and this product reflects that philosophy throughout the formulation.
What are the anti-glycation ingredients in the Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum and why do they matter?
The formula includes carnosine, benfotiamine, and carnitine, three ingredients that help prevent glycation, a process in which sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin fibers, causing them to become stiff and damaged over time. By including these actives alongside the retinaldehyde, the serum addresses both active aging repair and the underlying biochemical process that accelerates it.
Can the Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum be used every night?
For most skin types, nightly use is the goal, but Hale & Hush recommends that those with extra sensitive skin begin using it 2-3 times per week and gradually increase frequency as their skin adjusts. Starting with a reduced schedule gives the skin barrier time to acclimate, which tends to result in better long-term tolerance.
Does the Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum contain fragrance or common sensitizing ingredients?
This serum is fragrance-free and gluten-free. The formula relies on honeysuckle flower extracts as a natural preservative alternative rather than parabens, and the overall ingredient selection prioritizes compatibility with reactive skin. There are no synthetic fragrances or known common irritants in the formulation.
What role does niacinamide play in the Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum?
Niacinamide serves multiple functions in this formula. It helps calm redness and visible inflammation, supports the skin barrier, and works alongside the retinaldehyde to improve uneven skin tone over time. Its anti-inflammatory properties are part of what makes this serum well-tolerated by sensitive skin types who are incorporating vitamin A for the first time.
How should the Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum be layered with other products?
Apply the serum after cleansing and toning in the evening, then follow with a moisturizer to seal in the actives and support hydration. In the morning, apply a broad-spectrum SPF, as retinaldehyde increases the skin's sun sensitivity. The airless pump packaging helps preserve the stability of the retinal between uses.

My face does not like the typical retinal cream as I get red and can breakout. I have not had any problems using this retinal serum. My face looks so much better in the morning after using this serum. I started using twice a week and now 3 times a week.

In the past I've tried retinol products and they always irritated my semi sensitive sensitive acne prone skin. This doesn't irritate it at all. After using it every night for the past four months, my skin was constantly shedding off every time I put on foundation. I switched to using every other night, and the problem has cleared up.
