Clearing acne on sensitive skin requires a different kind of thinking. The protocols that work beautifully for resilient skin can push sensitive skin into a cycle of irritation, barrier compromise, and reactive breakouts that feels impossible to escape. The goal is not just to clear — it is to clear without the skin paying a price for it.
Mindy has sensitive Asian skin, a skin type that tends to have a naturally thinner epidermis, lower tolerance for aggressive actives, and a stronger tendency toward post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory erythema after breakouts. The standard acne approach of pushing hard with correctives was never going to work for her. We needed to find the path that moved her toward clear skin while protecting the barrier and minimizing inflammation every step of the way.
The Strategy: Clear Skin Through Calm
The foundation of Mindy's protocol was the Epicutis Lipid Serum. Incorporating a dedicated barrier repair serum into an acne routine is not a move we make for every client, but for Mindy it was essential. The TSC technology in the Lipid Serum calms inflammation at a cellular level and reinforces the lipid matrix, giving the skin the structural support it needs to tolerate corrective treatment without becoming reactive. Applied to slightly damp skin right after toning, it creates a stabilizing base that makes everything that follows more effective and better tolerated.
For exfoliation, we found that Mindy's skin responded better to salicylic acid than mandelic. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it penetrates into the follicle where acne forms, and it carries inherent anti-inflammatory properties that mandelic does not. For sensitive acne-prone skin dealing with redness and reactivity alongside breakouts, that added calming action makes a meaningful difference.
The other key discovery was GlyMed Plus Daily Skin Clarifier. Mixed directly with her corrective serum, it amplified the brightening and calming action of the protocol simultaneously, helping reduce the PIE and PIH that tend to linger on sensitive skin long after a breakout resolves. For Mindy, preventing post-breakout discoloration was just as important as clearing the breakouts themselves.
The result of these choices: Mindy's skin is now clear, and the path to get there didn't require destroying her barrier to do it.
What's Next for Mindy
Now that her skin is clear, we will be transitioning Mindy from Face Reality Advanced Acne Med to Mixi Hydroxi Acne Cream as her antibacterial support. Hydrogen peroxide-based correction is a gentler long-term maintenance option for sensitive skin that no longer needs the intensity of benzoyl peroxide to stay clear. It is a meaningful step toward a maintenance routine that her skin will continue to thrive on.
Mindy's Clear Skin Routine
Morning
Cleanse:
Face Reality Ultra Gentle Gel Cleanser
Tone:
Face Reality Soothing Radiance Toner
Restore: Epicutis Lipid Serum
Apply while skin is still damp after toning. Use less than a pea-sized amount — a little goes a long way. Allow to dry down fully before continuing.
Corrective Serum:
Face Reality Salicylic+ Serum mixed with 1 to 2 pumps of GlyMed Plus Daily Skin Clarifier
Hydrate:
Face Reality HydraRemedy Gel Serum
Moisturize:
Face Reality ClearDerma Moisturizer
Protect:
Face Reality powerMineral SPF 50
SPF is required when using acne correctives. Skipping it slows clearing and worsens post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Evening
Double Cleanse:
Face Reality Ultra Gentle Gel Cleanser
Icing:
Rub an ice cube over inflamed lesions and areas of redness for approximately two minutes. For a single lesion, apply for 3 seconds, lift for 3 seconds, and repeat for 2 minutes. This step is important for relieving active inflammation before applying your routine.
Tone:
Face Reality Soothing Radiance Toner
Restore:
Apply while skin is still damp. Pea-sized amount only. Allow to dry down fully before continuing.
Corrective Serum:
Face Reality Salicylic+ Serum mixed with 1 to 2 pumps of GlyMed Plus Daily Skin Clarifier
Hydrate:
Face Reality HydraRemedy Gel Serum
Antibacterial Support:
Face Reality Advanced Acne Med 2.5%
Acne Med is a preventative treatment, not a spot treatment. Apply to the entire acne-prone area every day, avoiding eyes and lips. Continue applying even when skin is clear to prevent future breakouts. Allow to dry and absorb for a few minutes before the next step.
Moisturize:
Weekly: Calming Mask (Twice a Week)
Mix a quarter-sized amount of Face Reality HydraCalm Mask with a small amount of Hale & Hush Bio Relief Powder and apply to clean skin. Leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This combination provides a meaningful calming boost for reactive, inflamed skin and is especially helpful during the early stages of the clearing process.
